When the Ferry Stops and the Bridge Gets Icy: Seasonal Access to PEI

The Wood Islands ferry shuts down every winter and the Confederation Bridge averages 17 wind-closure days a year. Here's what that means for timing a move, a visit, or a snowbird departure.

1. The Ferry Has a Season — and a Real Off-Season

The Wood Islands-Caribou ferry is not a year-round service. For 2026, Northumberland Ferries runs its full schedule (eight daily round trips) from June 15 to October 17, then switches to a reduced four-trip daily schedule from October 18 to December 20. After that, the ferry stops entirely for the winter, generally resuming only in the spring. If you're planning a crossing outside the June-to-December window, assume the ferry is not an option and plan around the bridge instead.

2. The Bridge Doesn't Close for the Season, But Wind Shuts It Down Regularly

Unlike the ferry, the Confederation Bridge operates year-round, 24/7. But it is genuinely exposed to Northumberland Strait winds, and closures are a normal part of winter life on the Island, not a rare event:

ConditionEffect
Steady winds over 70 km/h, gusts over 85 km/hHigh-sided vehicles (vans, trucks, anything over 2.2 m), motorcycles, and vehicles towing trailers are restricted
Steady winds over 105 km/hBridge closes to all traffic — rare, but it happens (a 36-hour closure during Hurricane Fiona in September 2022)
  • The bridge averages roughly 17 closure days a year for high-sided vehicles, concentrated almost entirely in the windy season
  • Windy season runs October through March, with December and January carrying the highest closure risk; July and August are the calmest months by far
  • Full closures to all traffic remain uncommon, but they're not theoretical — build in a buffer if you're travelling in winter with a tight schedule

3. What This Means If You're Timing an Interprovincial Move

If you're moving household belongings onto the Island with a rental truck or trailer, you're exactly the vehicle type most likely to be held up by a high-sided vehicle restriction. Avoid scheduling a winter move for a day with a storm forecast if you have any flexibility at all, and have a backup day in mind — moving companies operating this route are generally used to building that slack into their schedules.

4. What This Means If You're a Snowbird or Seasonal Resident

If your plan is to leave PEI for the winter and the ferry is part of your usual route, remember it simply isn't running once mid-December hits — you'll be using the bridge regardless, so check wind forecasts before a winter departure date, especially if you're towing a trailer or driving an RV, both treated as high-sided vehicles.

5. Practical Tips

  • Download the Confederation Bridge app or sign up for email travel advisories to get real-time closure status before you drive
  • If you have any flexibility, treat shoulder-season travel (late fall, early spring) as higher-risk for delays than midsummer
  • Check Northumberland Ferries' published schedule before assuming the ferry is running — don't rely on last year's dates
