Getting a Social Insurance Number (SIN) in PEI: Documents, Locations, and Timeline

1. What a SIN Is and Who Issues It
The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a confidential 9-digit federal identifier required to work legally in Canada or access government programs and benefits. It is managed and issued exclusively by the federal agency Service Canada, which operates completely separate from the provincial Access PEI service network.
2. Document Requirements by Status
To apply for a SIN, you must present one original Primary Document and one original Secondary Document. Photocopies or digital screenshots are not accepted at the counter.

Mandatory Secondary Document: Every applicant must also provide a valid secondary identity document to confirm their legal identity. The most common options are a valid Foreign Passport or a PEI Driver's Licence. If your legal name differs across documents, bring a supporting document showing the name change.
3. Three Ways to Apply: Speed vs. Convenience
- In Person (Recommended / Fastest): Visit the Service Canada Centre in Charlottetown. Your documents are verified on the spot, and your 9-digit SIN paper confirmation is issued instantly during your visit.
- Online via eSIN Portal: Submit digital scans of your documents through the federal portal. Processing takes 10 to 15 business days, and your SIN confirmation will be mailed to your PEI address.
- By Mail (Slowest): Mail your actual physical original documents to the Service Canada Social Insurance Registration Office, PO Box 7000, Bathurst, NB E2A 4T1. This is highly discouraged as you will be without your passport for weeks during transit.

5. No Fee, No Waiting to Start Work
There is no charge to apply for a SIN, and you do not need to have the physical card in hand before starting a job. Once your SIN application is successfully submitted, you are legally cleared to work. After you receive your SIN, the next immediate step on most newcomer checklists is visiting a local bank branch (such as RBC, TD, or Scotiabank in Charlottetown) to open a bank account, since financial institutions are legally required to record your SIN for tax and interest reporting purposes.
