Exchanging Your Driver's Licence When You Move to PEI from Another Province
Moving to PEI from anywhere else in Canada means no written test and no road test to get a PEI licence, but you only get 4 months to make the switch. Here's exactly what to bring to Access PEI.
1. The Good News First: No Tests, Any Canadian Province
PEI has a reciprocal licence exchange agreement with every other Canadian province and territory. If you're moving from Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia, or anywhere else in the country, you exchange your current licence for a PEI one with no written knowledge test and no road test. This is the same reciprocity PEI extends to the United States and a short list of other countries (Australia, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and a few others) — Canadian provinces get the easiest treatment PEI offers to anyone.
2. The Deadline: 4 Months, Not Indefinite
As a new PEI resident with a valid out-of-province licence, you must transfer to a PEI licence within 4 months of becoming a resident. This isn't a soft guideline — don't assume you can keep driving on your home-province licence indefinitely just because PEI recognizes it informally in the interim.
3. What to Bring to Access PEI
Exchanges are done in person at any Access PEI location. Bring:
- Your current, valid Canadian driver's licence (most recent copy)
- Any work or study permits, if applicable to your situation
- Two documents proving your current PEI address, such as:
- A formal lease or rental agreement
- A letter of employment on company letterhead, or a recent pay stub showing your name and address
- Federal or provincial government mail (tax correspondence, GST/HST notices)
- A bank or credit card statement, personal cheque, or mortgage document showing your name and address
4. The One Extra Step for Commercial Licences
If you're transferring a Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 licence (commercial/professional driving classes), you'll also need a Highway Safety Medical submitted and approved before the exchange can be completed. Factor the time this takes into your 4-month window, don't leave it until month 3.
5. Practical Sequence
- Gather your current licence plus two PEI address documents before your Access PEI visit — incomplete documentation means a second trip.
- If you hold a Class 1-4 licence, arrange your Highway Safety Medical early, since approval isn't instant.
- Visit any Access PEI location in person; all locations handle out-of-province exchanges.
- Pay the applicable fee and receive your PEI licence on the spot.
If you also brought a vehicle with you, note that registering it is a separate process with its own requirements, covered in the companion article on registering a vehicle in PEI after an interprovincial move.
