Opening a Bank Account in PEI as a Newcomer: Branches, Documents, and Newcomer Packages
Every major Canadian bank has a Charlottetown or Summerside branch and a newcomer account package with waived fees. Here is what to bring and how the options compare.
1. What to Bring to the Branch
Banks in PEI generally accept the same document combination as Service Canada:
- Passport
- Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR), work permit, or study permit
- Your Social Insurance Number, if you already have one (see the companion SIN guide); a bank account can typically be opened before the physical SIN card arrives
- A secondary ID such as a driver's licence, if available

3. Bank vs. Credit Union
The big five banks concentrate their branches in Charlottetown and Summerside. Credit Union PEI has the widest rural footprint on the Island, making it the practical choice if you are settling outside the two main cities. Interac e-Transfer, debit cards, and online banking work the same way across both.
4. Timeline
Most newcomer accounts can be opened in a single branch visit of 30 to 45 minutes, and your debit card is usually mailed within 5 to 10 business days. Some branches offer instant temporary debit cards on the spot.
5. Before You Go
Call ahead to confirm the branch has a newcomer specialist available; not every branch staffs one daily. Charlottetown's downtown branches and the Royalty Crossing area location cluster tend to have the most newcomer-banking experience on the Island.
