PR Card Renewal and the Path to Canadian Citizenship
Applying for a PR card renewal too early gets your application bounced back. Here is the actual 9-month rule, what counts toward your 730 days, and when the math changes once you're aiming for citizenship instead.
1. The 9-Month Rule Trips Up a Lot of People
Do not apply to renew your PR card while it still has more than 9 months (270 days) left before expiry; IRCC will simply return the application. The only exception is a legal name or gender identifier change, which lets you apply earlier regardless of expiry date.

Urgent processing requires evidence, such as a job requirement or a family medical emergency; it isn't automatic just because you ask.
3. The Residency Obligation for a New Card
To qualify for a renewed PR card, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) within the past 5 years. Some days spent outside Canada can still count, for example, accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse or parent, or qualifying Canadian employment abroad, so keep records if any of your time away falls into those categories.
4. If Your Card Expires While You're Outside Canada
You cannot renew a PR card from outside the country. Instead, you'll need a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) just to board a flight back to Canada, a separate and generally slower process; the practical lesson is to renew before you travel, not after your card has already lapsed.
5. Citizenship Has a Higher Bar Than PR Card Renewal
The physical presence requirement for citizenship is 1,095 days within the 5 years immediately before your application date, meaningfully more than the 730 days needed just to keep PR status. You must also be a permanent resident (not under an active removal order) at the time you apply.

7. A Practical Sequencing Tip
If your PR card is going to expire around the same time you'll hit your 1,095-day citizenship threshold, it's often simpler to go ahead and renew the PR card first (it's cheaper and faster) rather than letting it lapse while you wait out the extra months needed for citizenship eligibility; citizenship processing itself takes considerably longer than a PR card renewal.
