Getting your PEI driver's licence
Step-by-step overview of exchanging an out-of-province licence or testing as a new driver.
Getting your PEI driver's licence
PEI uses a graduated licensing system. Your path depends on whether you are exchanging a valid licence from another country or province, or learning to drive for the first time.
If you already have a licence
Many out-of-province and some international licences can be exchanged at Access PEI. Bring:
- Current licence (and a certified translation if not in English or French)
- Proof of PEI residency
- Identification matching your licence name
Processing times vary by country of origin. Some applicants must pass a knowledge or road test.
New drivers
Learner's permits require passing a written test on road signs and rules. Practice materials are available from the province. After the permit stage, you'll complete supervised driving hours before a road test.
Rural driving realities
Winter conditions, unlit highways, and wildlife crossings are normal here. Allow extra time between communities — Charlottetown to Summerside is roughly one hour; western PEI adds more.
Related services
- Vehicle registration is separate from licensing — complete both after you establish residency.
- Insurance is mandatory; compare brokers early.
Questions about ID for non-drivers? Access PEI staff can explain provincial ID cards that do not grant driving privileges.
