1. There's No Bag-Tag System, You Get Two Carts
Every property in PEI is served by the Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) under its mandatory Waste Watch program. You're issued two wheeled carts: a black cart for waste and a green cart for compost. They're collected on alternating weeks, not both every week.
2. Recycling Works Differently
Recyclables don't go in a cart. They go in clear, transparent bags you buy yourself, collected monthly. Drivers physically inspect bags and carts, and improperly sorted material gets tagged and left at the curb.
3. Finding Your Actual Pickup Day
Collection days vary by street, and holidays shift the schedule. CPEI's Waste Watch page looks up your exact street address and returns your next blue-bag, compost, and waste pickup dates directly from the province's official schedule.
4. Rules That Trip Up Newcomers
- No bag tags to buy; the service is funded through property tax, so renters typically see it folded into rent
- Waste bags must be clear and transparent; solid-colour bags, including blue ones, get rejected for waste, since blue is reserved for recyclables only
- Spring and fall each get a 3-week special cleanup window for oversized items
- Free Saturday morning drop-off, 8 a.m. to noon, is available at Waste Watch Drop-Off Centres if you miss your curbside day
