The PEI School System Explained: English, French Immersion, and French First Language

PEI runs two school boards, not one: the Public Schools Branch and the French-language Commission scolaire. Here is how English, French Immersion, and French First Language actually differ, and when to register.

1. Two Boards, Three Program Paths

There's no separate Catholic school board in PEI, unlike some other provinces; PSB and CSLF cover the entire public system.

2. Kindergarten Registration Opens Every November

A child must turn five by December 31 of the year they start kindergarten (you can wait a year if your child isn't ready at the minimum age). Kindergarten registration notices are typically posted in November for the following school year, with registration open at your local zoned school during school hours. Bring government-issued identification and proof of address.

3. English vs. French Immersion vs. French First Language

English program (PSB): standard English-language instruction
French Immersion (PSB): French-language instruction for English-speaking families, available as Early Immersion (starting kindergarten), Mid Immersion, or Late Immersion (typically starting Grade 6/7)
French First Language (CSLF): for families where French is the home or heritage language

4. Late French Immersion Has Its Own Deadline

For families considering Late French Immersion starting around Grade 6, PSB holds regional information sessions in the winter (typically February) where parents can ask questions before committing. The registration deadline for Late French Immersion has historically landed around March 1, so this is not a decision you can make over the summer before the school year starts; confirm the exact date each year directly with PSB.

5. Confirming Your Zone

Each board organizes schools into a "Family of Schools" for zoning and busing. If you're not sure which zone you live in, use the PSB or CSLF online bus planning tool, or contact the board directly, before assuming a school across town is your zoned option.

6. New to PEI or to Canadian Schools?
