Winter Driving in PEI: Tires, Storms, and Road Closures
PEI doesn't legally require winter tires, but the province recommends them strongly and regulates studded tires by calendar date. Here is what to know before your first Island winter behind the wheel.
1. Winter Tires Are Recommended, Not Legally Required
Unlike Quebec, PEI's Highway Traffic Act does not mandate winter tires. The province strongly recommends installing four matching winter tires, look for the mountain/snowflake symbol, from November through April, since they roughly double traction on snow and ice compared to all-season tires.
2. Studded Tires Have a Hard Legal Window
Studded tires are only legal between October 1 and May 31. Running them outside that window risks a fine of up to $150, and driving on studs past May 31 damages road surfaces and highway markings.
3. Checking Conditions Before You Drive
Call 511, or check 511.gov.pe.ca, for updated road condition information anywhere on the Island. For the two highest-impact winter chokepoints, use CPEI's live Island Access page for current bridge wind conditions, and confirm ferry status directly if you're travelling near Wood Islands.
4. Keep a Winter Kit in the Car
Highway Safety's recommended kit: non-perishable food and water, a wind-up flashlight, a small shovel, a snowbrush and scraper, a first aid kit, a blanket, and paper road maps in case you lose signal. Add sand, salt, or non-clumping cat litter, antifreeze/washer fluid, a tow rope, jumper cables, and a fire extinguisher to your trunk for winter.
