2026 update worth knowing: under an IRCC operational bulletin effective June 9 through December 31, 2026, eligible spouses applying from within Canada no longer need to wait for an Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR) on the principal applicant's PR application before applying for their own open work permit. Instead, they can apply using:
- A copy of the PR application portal submission confirmation email
- Proof of fee payment
This matters practically: under the standard rule, a spouse could otherwise be locked out of the labour market for months while waiting on the AOR alone. This measure only applies to applications filed from inside Canada, spousal work permit applications submitted from outside Canada still follow the standard AOR-first process.

Enrolment logistics, English/French language support, and school-year timing should be planned around your own work permit approval date, not assumed to align automatically.
