PEI's Best Small Towns Beyond Charlottetown
Victoria-by-the-Sea, North Rustico, Souris, and Georgetown: how far each actually is from Charlottetown and what makes each worth the detour.
1. Four Towns, Four Different Days Out

2. Victoria-by-the-Sea
Sitting almost exactly halfway between Charlottetown and Summerside on the south shore, Victoria is a small, walkable village of artisan studios, a chocolate shop, and seasonal restaurants clustered around a working harbour. The Victoria Playhouse, PEI's longest-running little theatre, seats only around 100-130 people and runs a summer season of music and theatre in an intimate, century-old building.
3. North Rustico
A working fishing harbour that doubles as one of the main gateways into Prince Edward Island National Park. The boardwalk along the harbour is a straightforward, flat walk with views of the fishing fleet, and it sits directly on the Central Coastal Drive alongside Cavendish and Green Gables.
4. Georgetown
A historic shipbuilding town on the eastern side of the Island, roughly 40 minutes from Charlottetown, 40 minutes from Souris, and 30 minutes from the Wood Islands ferry terminal. King's Playhouse anchors the town's cultural life with a June-to-September performance season; box office hours run Monday to Friday 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in season.
5. Souris
On the far eastern side of the Island, Souris is best known for its sea glass beach and as the departure point for the CTMA ferry to Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec, a 5-hour crossing that runs roughly April through November. A seasonal shuttle service, East Connection, also runs passengers between Charlottetown and Souris from June to September.
6. Planning Notes
- All four towns are seasonal-heavy: restaurants, shops, and theatres largely operate May/June through September, with limited or no service outside that window.
- Pairing towns with a coastal drive avoids backtracking: Victoria and North Rustico both fit the Central Coastal Drive; Georgetown and Souris both fit Points East.
