PEI's Three Scenic Coastal Drives: Which One Fits Your Trip
North Cape, Central, or Points East: the real length, drive time, and highlights of PEI's three signed coastal drives, so you pick the right one instead of trying to do all three in a weekend.
1. Three Routes, Very Different Commitments
Prince Edward Island signs three official coastal driving routes. They are not interchangeable, and treating them as one loop is the most common planning mistake visitors make.

2. Budget Realistic Time, Not Just Kilometres
All three drives combined trace nearly the Island's full 1,100 km of coastline. Tourism PEI's own guidance is 3 to 5 days to cover the coastline properly, factoring in look-offs, lunch stops, and at least one or two attraction visits per day. Trying to compress all three into a single day trip means driving past almost everything worth stopping for.
3. Picking Based on What You Actually Want
- Cliffs, wind farms, and Acadian culture: North Cape Coastal Drive. This route runs the entire western peninsula and is the one to pick for dramatic red-cliff photography.
- Literary sites, beaches, and families with limited time: Central Coastal Drive. Shortest of the three, and it covers Green Gables Heritage Place, Victoria-by-the-Sea, and PEI National Park in a single day.
- Beachcombing and getting off the tourist track: Points East Coastal Drive. Longest and least developed, with over 50 beaches and long stretches between towns.
4. Practical Notes Before You Go
- Fuel and cell coverage thin out on North Cape and Points East; fill up in Summerside, Souris, or Montague before long stretches.
- The Points East route genuinely needs two days if you want to stop at Basin Head, Orwell Corner, and the East Point Lighthouse without rushing.
- Each coastal drive has branch connections to the Confederation Trail, so a driving day can be broken up with a short walk or bike stretch.
