Innovation PEI is the single point of entry for provincial business funding, and LaunchPad PEI replaced the Startup Zone in 2024. Here is who actually helps a new operator, and how to reach them.
1. Innovation PEI Is Your Starting Point
Innovation PEI operates as the province's single point of entry for virtually all provincial business funding and support, run from one Charlottetown office rather than scattered across multiple ministries. A Business Development Officer will assess your business and pre-screen your eligibility across more than 10 provincial programs in a single conversation, then point you toward complementary federal programs if relevant.

2. What Happened to the Startup Zone
The Charlottetown-based Startup Zone, long the go-to hub for early-stage entrepreneurs, closed in June 2024 after an independent report flagged high management turnover and weakened stakeholder relationships. Its support functions transitioned to LaunchPad PEI, a non-profit incubator managed by Innovation PEI. LaunchPad is also a designated incubator for the federal Start-up Visa Program, though its eligibility criteria lean toward businesses in the bioscience sector with clear job-creation and export potential, so confirm fit with a Business Development Officer before assuming it applies to your venture.

4. The Chamber Network
The Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce is PEI's largest, with 1,000+ business members employing more than 20,000 Islanders. Beyond advocacy with government, membership gets you access to networking events, boardroom rentals, and introductions across nearly every industry sector on the Island. Summerside and other regions run their own chambers as well; joining the one closest to your business location tends to matter more locally than joining the largest one by default.
5. CBDCs for Financing, Chambers for Community
Think of it as a division of labour: Community Business Development Corporations (CBDC Central PEI, CBDC West Prince Ventures, CBDC PEI East) focus on financing and lending advice, Innovation PEI focuses on provincial program funding and regulatory navigation, and your local Chamber of Commerce focuses on community connections and advocacy. A new operator typically needs all three at different points in the first year.
