PEI Business Grants and Support Programs: Innovation PEI and Beyond
Innovation PEI runs over 30 business support programs, but most first-time applicants only ever hear about one. Here's what the Small Business Investment Grant, Capital Acquisition Assistance, and a Business Development Officer can actually do for you.
1. Start With a Business Development Officer, Not a Program Name
Innovation PEI runs more than 30 business support programs, and the fastest way to figure out which ones actually fit your business is to talk to a Business Development Officer first, rather than trying to self-select from the list. Officers assess your project and will redirect you to a better-fitting program if your first choice isn't a good match.
2. Two Core Capital Programs
| Program | What it covers | Maximum support |
|---|---|---|
| Small Business Investment Grant | Non-repayable contribution toward eligible capital asset purchases, for efficiency and innovation upgrades | 15% of eligible cost, up to $3,750 |
| Capital Acquisition Assistance | Technology, equipment, and infrastructure investment, generally for export-oriented strategic sector businesses | 25% of eligible cost, up to $25,000 |
You can only use one of these two programs per fiscal year (April 1 to March 31) — they aren't stackable against the same purchase. Capital Acquisition Assistance applications are also evaluated on broader criteria: long-term viability, export sales potential, employment creation, and economic benefit to the province, not simply cost eligibility.
3. Other Programs Worth Knowing About
- Innovation Fund — supports bringing a new product, service, or process to market
- Entrepreneur Loan Program — short-term financing support for Island entrepreneurs
- Future Farmer Program 2.0 — low-interest loans specifically for young farmers, launched in late 2025
- PEI Labour Rebate and other Tax Credit and Rebate programs — reduce the effective cost of hiring or specific investments
- Fisheries and Aquaculture Financial Assistance — sector-specific support parallel to the broader business programs
4. Timing Matters
Capital Acquisition Assistance applications must be submitted before any financial or legal commitment is made on the project — applying after you've already bought the equipment disqualifies you. The Small Business Investment Grant runs on an annual cycle (April 1 to March 31) with a hard application deadline of March 31 and a separate payment-request deadline the following May.
5. Where Most First-Time Applicants Go Wrong
- Assuming a program covers a purchase already made, rather than checking timing rules first
- Applying directly without an initial conversation with a Business Development Officer, which often surfaces a better-suited program
- Overlooking that non-repayable government funding sources combined generally cannot exceed 75% of total eligible project costs, meaning some owner or lender contribution is always required
