Getting Your P.Eng. in PEI as an Internationally Trained Engineer
Engineers PEI requires a specific WES ICAP course-by-course report, not a standard evaluation, plus 48 months of documented competency-based experience before you can apply for P.Eng. Here's the exact multi-year sequence.
1. The WES Report Has to Be the Right Type
If your engineering degree is from outside Canada, Engineers PEI requires World Education Services (WES) International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP) course-by-course evaluation specifically, naming Engineers PEI as the recipient. A standard WES report, or one from a different package, isn't sufficient; if you already have a prior WES evaluation, you'll need to upgrade it to the ICAP course-by-course version.
2. Enroll as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) First
You can submit your EIT application even before moving to PEI, but it cannot be approved until you're actually living in the province. If your degree isn't from a Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB)-accredited institution, your WES evaluation feeds directly into this EIT review.
3. The 48-Month Experience Requirement

4. The Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) System

- Each competency needs at least one Validator, though one validator can confirm multiple competencies
- Validators must collectively have first-hand knowledge covering as much of your 4 years of experience as possible
- Validator feedback can also serve as one of your 3 required references for the final P.Eng. application, separate from the CBA system itself
5. The National Professional Practice Examination (NPPE)
Passing the NPPE is mandatory for registration. It tests professional practice and ethics knowledge, not technical engineering content, most candidates study for it separately from their technical competency documentation.

7. Practical Sequence
- Order the WES ICAP course-by-course report early, before you land if possible, naming Engineers PEI as recipient.
- Submit your EIT application as soon as you have the WES results, even before arriving in PEI.
- Once in PEI and working under supervision, start logging CBA competency entries as you go, don't wait until year 4 to document everything retroactively.
- Line up your 3 references and confirm validator coverage well before you plan to submit your full P.Eng. application.
- Schedule and pass the NPPE on a timeline independent of your competency documentation.
