PEI Teacher Certification for Internationally Educated Teachers

Pathways to Teach Canada is now the mandatory single-entry point for internationally educated teachers seeking PEI certification, and it charges separately from the province: $500 for credential assessment, $400 for the language test.

1. Two Organizations, Two Separate Steps

PEI certification for internationally educated teachers (IETs) is now a two-step process: first Pathways to Teach Canada assesses your credentials and language proficiency, then you apply separately to PEI's Department of Education and Early Years for the actual teaching license. Pathways to Teach Canada does not grant certification itself, it only feeds results forward.

2. Step One: Pathways to Teach Canada Assessments

3. Step Two: PEI's Own Certification Requirements

Once Pathways to Teach Canada forwards your results, PEI's Registrar separately requires:

Evidence you completed an approved pre-service teacher education program
Official transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended
Proof of good standing with the teacher certification authority in any other jurisdiction where you've held an equivalent license
Thorough proficiency in English or French to teach in a PEI public school

4. The Conditional Letter of Eligibility

If you meet every certification requirement except proof of a work permit or other eligibility to work in Canada, PEI's Registrar issues a Conditional Letter of Eligibility. This confirms your credentials have already cleared review, so you're not stuck redoing the academic assessment once your work authorization comes through, you just submit that proof separately when it's ready.

5. Alternate Route: Skilled Trades Teachers

If you're seeking certification to teach a technical or vocational subject (automotive technology, culinary arts, welding, and similar), PEI's regulations allow an alternate qualifying path based on 5 years of occupational experience plus a recognized occupational credential in that trade, rather than the standard academic pre-service program.

6. Practical Sequence

Use the Pathways to Teach Canada eligibility tool to confirm which assessment(s) you need.
Submit transcripts and complete the Credential Assessment and/or LCATP, budgeting for the combined $500-$900+ in Pathways fees depending on your situation.
Once Pathways forwards results, submit PEI's separate certification application with transcripts and standing letters from prior jurisdictions.
If you're still finalizing work authorization, ask the Registrar (registrar@gov.pe.ca) about a Conditional Letter of Eligibility so the credential review doesn't block on paperwork you're still waiting on.
